Pippin's Cozy Dream House: A STEM Picture Book: Exploring the Science of Passive Houses and Energy Efficiency

Can a house really feel like a warm hug?

Pippin the Penguin is tired of shivering in his icy home. He wants a house that stays warm all by itself! Join Pippin and his friend Alfred as they discover the "invisible magic" of building science.

In this beautifully illustrated STEM adventure, children will learn how we can build better homes for ourselves and the planet. From "Thick Sweaters" (insulation) to "Magical Lungs" (fresh air systems), complex engineering concepts are turned into simple, relatable metaphors that even the youngest readers can understand.

Written by Toby Yang, a Certified Passive House Designer, this book covers:

  • Insulation: Why wrapping a house in a "sweater" keeps the heat in.

  • Airtightness: How a "Giant Zipper" stops shivery drafts.

  • Solar Gain: Using the sun as a "Sun-Catcher" to warm our floors for free.

  • Ventilation: How a "Magical Lung" keeps indoor air fresh and healthy.

Perfect for curious kids aged 3–8, parents who love sustainability, and educators looking for a fun introduction to energy efficiency. Help Pippin build his dream house and inspire the next generation of eco-engineers!

The Inspiration Behind Pippin’s Cozy Dream House

I wrote 'Pippin’s Cozy Dream House' for three reasons:

For my son Alfred: So he can see the "invisible magic" his dad works on every day.

For Parents & Clients: To provide a simple way to explain why a Passive House feels like a "warm hug" through metaphors like "Thick Sweaters" (insulation) and "Magical Lungs" (HRV).

For our Industry: To give my fellow designers a tool to inspire future eco-heroes from an early age.

A little behind-the-scenes: As a designer, I enjoyed the creative challenge of using AI-assisted imagery to translate complex building science into these vibrant, cozy illustrations. It’s amazing how technology allows us to share our passion for the planet with the next generation.
